Hello
I'm Timothy - a historian, curator, lecturer and storyteller.

I believe history is best understood when we look at it from every angle, not just the familiar or convenient ones. The past is colourful, complex, and often messy — and that’s exactly what makes it worth exploring. If a story seems too neat, it probably isn’t the whole truth.

My mission is to open up history to new audiences by making it more accessible, engaging, and thought-provoking — because the past matters most when it speaks to the present.

Professional Life
I’m an 18th and 19th century historian specialising in inclusive histories – the lives of those whose stories have been forgotten or under-represented. In particular, my research spotlights queer histories and histories of people of colour. I’m also internationally recognised for my scholarship on Jane Austen.

I’m a lecturer of literature and culture at the University of Oxford, and the National Trust’s first ever Inclusive Histories Curator. I’m also a guest curator at Jane Austen’s House, Chawton.

I’m passionate about widening access to history and am known for my advocacy work regarding diversity in the heritage sector. I’m a trustee for Historic Buildings & Places, a board member of the London Museums Group and sit on the advisory board for the Bath Preservation Trust.
